I was commissioned by [REDACTED], a national music organization with a wide range of members, in 2020. I was tasked with creating an analysis of the impact of upcoming Artificial Intelligence developments within different sectors of music industry: mastering, distribution, composition, and royalties.
Along with amazing graduate students from Berklee College of Music, we created a 100+ page SWOT analysis that was intended to act as an informative document with advice and cautionary insight.
It was even handed, exciting, and at times hopeful. We believe this document would have helped people prepare for the upcoming tide of changes. [REDACTED] felt otherwise.
You can view portions of the presentation below.

We gathered data from research documents and interviews in order to assess the risks and benefits of changing technologies that were soon to arrive.

The honesty of the document proved to be so unsettling to the organization that after several months they decided to shelve the document and requested that their name be removed. They feared “bad press” from our potentially alarming prognosis. Specifically, they disagreed with the suggestion that AI mastering would impact the mastering industry.

We are proud of the results of our research and presentation and we strongly believe that presenting this in the year of 2020 would have made a positive impact on the music industry as a whole.
